Camponotus singularis
Origin: Southeast Asia
Camponotus singularis (Red-Headed Giant Carpenter Ant) is one of the largest and most visually striking ant species in the world. Native to Southeast Asia, this species features a deep red-orange head and thorax contrasting against a dark, velvety black body.
Physical Characteristics
Massive Size: Workers range from 11mm to 19mm, while queens can reach a staggering 20mm to 22mm in length.
Polymorphism: They have distinct worker castes, featuring both minor workers and massive "major" soldiers.
Habitat & Behavior
Canopy Dwellers: In the wild, they typically inhabit the top and middle sections of tropical rainforest canopies, nesting in decaying wood and hollow branches.
Defensive Mechanism: When threatened, these ants will actively defend themselves and can emit a noticeable floral, citrus-like scent.
Diet: In nature, they are omnivores, foraging for nectar, honeydew from aphids, and various insects.
Ant Keeping & Care
Fragile Starter Phase: The colony foundation phase (starting from a single queen) is notoriously difficult. Queens are extremely sensitive to stress and vibrations, and the initial growth rate is very slow.
Established Colonies: Once the colony reaches a critical threshold of around 100 workers, they become much bolder, more active, and aggressively territorial.
Ideal Conditions: They thrive in tropical environments with temperatures between 25°C and 28°Cand relative humidity levels between 50% and 70%.
